Background[]
Boukman Baptiste was a Haitian crime lord with nationalist views on how the criminal black market should work, believing for instance that control over smuggling through Haiti´s ports and all other forms of black market transactions in the nation-state should be commanded by its own people, such as himself. With that in mind, after Raymond Reddington disappeared following Elizabeth Keen´s death, Boukman tried to take over his operations in Haiti and over the Atlantic Ocean in general, but was prevented from succeeding in that endeavor by Dembe, who was temporarily running Reddington´s empire in his absence. To take down Baptiste, Dembe ordered and personally led an assassination attempt on his life, but ended up killing his son instead, who was in the car with Boukman. Following this tragedy, Baptiste set his own car on fire and faked his death before Dembe in order to escape.
