Newton Phillips was a recurring character in the NBC series, The Blacklist.

Background[]

He served as Raymond Reddington's aide.

It is not known how Red and Newton Phillips came to meet, but they appear to have known each other long enough that Red trusted him with fighting his unknown adversary and to have knowledge on what Red is doing with the FBI.

Season 1[]

Pilot[]

He was seen giving a briefcase to Raymond Reddington before he surrendered to the FBI. The briefcase contained a wealth of Red's information and aliases, most of which the FBI had no knowledge of.

The Courier[]

He tells Red that the package is in motion and that the Courier has been hired to complete the transaction. He reminds Red about an earlier incident in Cairo involving the Courier.

After the rescue of Seth Nelson, he tells Red that he wasted his one question as it could have revealed their adversary or “could have made the world tremble”. Red tells him he is betting on the long term.

Gina Zanetakos[]

While Red is negotiating with a Middle Eastern client, he receives a call about Tom Keen being taken in for questioning. After his release Tom Keen states that Newton Phillips was the man who interviewed him for the teaching position.

The Good Samaritan[]

Red tells him to make the arrangements for Luli Zeng's cremation. He is revealed to be the mole that helped Alan Fitch and Anslo Garrick raid the Post Office after they threatened his family. Red kills him by suffocation, after spreading Luli's ashes, so the death will be ruled an accident and Newton Phillips's family will not know the truth.

Season 4[]

Requiem[]

Newton is seen in flashbacks bringing Kathryn Nemec to meet Red and then before Red surrenders himself to the FBI. After Red's surrender, he reassures Nemec and Dembe about Red's actions.

Unanswered Questions[]

  1. When was he recruited by Alan Fitch?
  2. When he interviewed Tom Keen (“Gina Zanetakos”) was he working for Red or Alan Fitch?
