Raymond Reddington is a main character in the NBC series The Blacklist.

Personality[]

Raymond Reddington is an exceptionally intelligent and highly driven individual with developed sociopathic tendencies. This appears to be the product of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) as there are no signs that he was born this way. Sly, manipulative, and charming, Red is always three steps ahead of everyone else, and is determined to keep himself a mystery. As he puts it, “I’m a criminal. Criminals are notorious liars. Everything about me is a lie.” That’s probably true, actually, but who knows for sure. He dislikes rude people, which is something that Agent Ressler pointed out after Red let a notorious drug dealer get away with false identification. Ressler mentioned that Red wouldn’t let the drug dealer get away because he was rude and Red doesn’t like rude people. Red responded with, “He is on my jet.”

Red does not believe he’s a psychopath. In his eyes, what he’s done in the criminal world is all an effect of the murder of his family. He turned his back on his country and his career because somehow they were responsible for the elimination of his family. He functions with his own set of morals, that most of society probably wouldn’t agree with.

He is also an extremely ruthless individual with no qualms about killing and often chuckles at victims' death with a smile (rarely). He does not needlessly kill for the pleasure of it nor is he a genocidal maniac hellbent on eliminating all crime, but rather sees it as an effective means of gaining information, leading to the eventual deaths of blacklisters. He displays almost no empathy when killing people but instead covers it up with an affable facade to deceive his victims into lowering their guard so he can kill them or exploit them. He himself stated that when he kills someone he doesn’t pretend to care how they feel; he shot, stabbed, and suffocated them but he never coddled them, because it is disrespectful. He is shown to be extremely compassionate and caring towards Elizabeth Keen and is fiercely dedicated to protecting her and will go to extreme lengths to make sure she's safe, while also displaying a natural care for the members of his unit. He is polite, kind, and caring towards people that he has known for an extended period of time, with his affable persona almost always on display. He is nothing if not a man of his word, as he always keeps his promises. He vowed to Katarina to protect her daughter, and has dedicated his whole life to doing so.

Appearance[]

Red has tattoos and scars, none of which have been seen on screen, only mentioned. He has heavy burns on his back, as shown in "Berlin: Conclusion".

He has fair skin, stands somewhat tall at 5 foot 10 inch, weighs around 190 pounds and is of medium build. His hair is brown but he is currently bald, having shaved his head recently. He also has green eyes.

Red is very meticulous in his way of dressing, always making sure it fits the occasion. He’s usually found in a tailored high- end three-piece suit, a tie (usually colorful), a fedora, Italian leather shoes, and his signature rose- colored glasses. He also always wears a wristwatch. Depending on the function, he may appear in a custom tailored tuxedo. He either wears a blue windbreaker over the suit or an overcoat if it’s cold. He also has a fur-trimmed parka for very cold temperatures. But he is also a master criminal, and quite often dresses for those kinds of activities as well, wearing nondescript, nowhere near flashy dress if he needs to blend into an environment.

Background[]

He is a criminal mastermind, making it to #4 and later to #1 on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, who suddenly turns himself in after 20+ years of evading the FBI.

In “Sutton Ross”, it is revealed that he is not Raymond Reddington but an imposter who has been using his identity for more than 30 years. In “Rassvet”, it is revealed that he is Ilya Koslov, a childhood friend of Katarina Rostova, the love of his life and her occasional lover. This is later revealed as false. The real Reddington was the man shot by Elizabeth Keen as a child while he was fighting with her mother, and though Katarina and Ilya saved him from the fire, he died of his wounds. However, in “Orion Relocation Services”, it is revealed he is not Ilya Koslov. In “Katarina Rostova”, it is revealed that Katarina does not know who Reddington is and that the real Ilya conspired with her father, Dominic, to kill Katarina and protect Liz. In ”Godwin Page”, it is revealed that he is N-13, however he did not steal the Sikorsky Archive.

Raymond Reddington attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating at the top of his class at the age of 24, and was being groomed for admiral when he disappeared while coming home to visit his family for Christmas in 1990. Four years later he resurfaced, selling classified documents to the enemy, and was charged with treason in absentia. Over the next 20 years he built a syndicate of contacts: spies, thieves, smugglers, drug traffickers, people smugglers, human traffickers, arms traffickers, counterfeiters, forgers, hackers, mercenaries, and assassins. During this time, U.S. assets located in Moscow, Islamabad, and Beijing were compromised. He infiltrated the private sector, and there was no industry that was out of his reach, including technology, shipping, communications, security/military contracting and pharmaceuticals. Eventually he went from just selling secrets to starting wars, toppling governments, and influencing geopolitics to suit his needs. He became known as “the Concierge of Crime” due to his ability to arrange deals in the black market. He was ranked fourth, and later first, on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list as an “arrest on sight” fugitive, as shown when he surrendered to the FBI in “Pilot”. In a flashback in “Requiem”, Red reveals to Kathryn Nemec that he created his criminal network with the sole purpose of protecting Elizabeth Keen and when his enemies got too close, went to the FBI to ensure her protection more directly.

In “Luther Braxton”, “The Cryptobanker”, and “Mr. Gregory Devry”, it is stated that Red has been on the list the longest at 24/25 years. In “Mr. Gregory Devry” it is stated that the task force has been operating with Red for 28 months.

In “Dr. Hans Koehler it is revealed that he had Hans Koehler perform plastic surgery on his face and has changed his original appearance to that of Raymond Reddington. In “Marko Jankowics” it is revealed that Katarina Rostova had arranged for “Red” to go through the operation.

In 1991, although seemingly unknown to him, Red was blamed for the bombing of a meeting of Russian intelligence leaders in Kursk. After the bombing a woman named Zoe D'Antonio was arrested as a dissident. Her father, Milos Kirchoff, was later exiled to a gulag. While he was in jail, Milos started receiving what he thought were pieces of his daughter’s body. Milos vowed to get his revenge on Reddington. However, unknown to both Milos and Red, Red was being framed by Alan Fitch and Stanley R. Kornish. This series of misinformation eventually led to a gang war between Berlin’s and Reddington’s syndicates.

In 1992, Red and Sebastian Royce robbed the American Embassy in Italy.

In 1993, Reddington found then 14-year-old Dembe Zuma chained in a basement in Nairobi, Kenya. He took Dembe and raised him as his own. It most likely was around this time that Red learned of the Mombasa Cartel.

In 2008, after working together for some time, Anslo Garrick tipped off the FBI to Red’s location. Red managed to escape and figured out that Anslo had betrayed him. Red found him and shot him in the face. While the shot was not fatal, it did damage the side of his face.

Around 2008 Reddington had purchased weapons developed by Frederick Barnes.

In 2012, Josephine Moliere, a love interest of Red’s, called him in a panic. Her husband, a member of the Stockwell crime family, had found out that she was seeing Red behind his back and in an alcoholic rage started to beat her. Red raced to her house and found her beaten and bloody on the floor. Her husband broke into the room, where Red shot him to death. He then took Josephine to get medical attention. Sometime afterward he learned that her marriage was arranged for the 2 crime families to unite. He then bought Josephine’s house and vowed to find Alistair Pitt, who was responsible for the marriage, and kill him in the house.

In the same year, Reddington was contacted by Gina Zanetakos when she needed help assassinating a Supreme Court judge.

Sometime prior to 2013, Red came into contact with Bo Chang. Red put Bo on retainer and used his services to hide while he traveled.

At some point Red crossed paths with Lucy Brooks. In June 2013, Lucy used Eric Trettel to elude Reddington.

There are some events in Reddington’s past for which the dates are unknown.

Red refused to deal with Floriana Campo and her slavery network.

At some point, Reddington worked with Wujing in Hong Kong.

In Bolivia, Red and T. Earl King VI took part in some sort of deal. Red abandoned the deal due to the risk, but King stayed because he had invested millions of dollars. After Red left, soldiers raided the area and severely injured King. King partially blamed Red since he left him.

Red rose to prominence in the criminal underworld and became a member of the Shell Island Retreat.

During his time on the run, Red became friends with a con artist by the name of Gregory Devry.

At some point Red came into contact with Marvin Gerard, a lawyer whom he later consulted before surrendering to the FBI.

Several years before Red turned himself in, Roger Hobbs offered Red an opportunity to invest in a new company of his called the Longevity Initiative.

During Red’s criminal career he became associated with the Yakuza crime lord Mako Tanida. While Ressler and other members of a special taskforce assembled to catch Reddington were chasing him, they were able to arrest Tanida.

At some point, Red was in Belgrade with Henkel and Luther Todd Braxton. Braxton supposedly bested Red and killed Henkel, hanging him with one of Red’s neckties.

Years prior to turning himself in, Red somehow found out about Leon Kiklinski, a media manipulating terrorist for hire. He then kept Kiklinski on his radar.

While in Cairo, Red crossed paths with Tommy Phelps, which resulted in the deaths of two of Red’s men.

Near Sochi, Red shared a prison cell with a man named Yevgeniy, a member of the Front.

Red was robbed by Ivan while he was meeting with Ivan’s brother.

Off the coast of Selangor, Red helped Andre Hamilton, a member of the Cabal, fake his death and resettle in Kettle Lake.

For some now-unknown reason, Reddington spent a majority of his past watching over Elizabeth Keen. He had a close friend, Sam Scott, foster her when she lost her parents. Red even kept a wine bottle that she and Sam had made together.

As she got older, Red realized Sam couldn’t keep an eye on her as much. Red then contacted an acquaintance of his known as the Major. The Major chose one of his best agents, Jacob Phelps, for Red to use. Red wanted him to become friends with Liz and keep tabs on her. Following Red’s orders, Jacob became Tom Keen.

Later however, Red found out that Tom had become romantically involved with Liz. Red ended the business arrangement almost immediately. Not long after that, Red found out that both the Major and Tom had aligned themselves with Berlin’s syndicate.

It is also known that Red kept an eye on Liz while she was training for the FBI. It is possible that it was during this time Red took an interest in the Tracy Solobotkin and John X cases, as these were cases Liz was required to study and remained unsolved. Red made sure Liz graduated 2 weeks early. Red most likely learned of Karl Hoffman once Liz was assigned to head the investigation.

In 2017, it is revealed that Reddington was involved in the fate of Liz's mother, Katarina Rostova. Dembe comments that he doesn't think Elizabeth will “ever be ready to learn about what you did to Katarina”. Red is determined to make sure Liz never learns the truth of what happened to her mother, believing the truth will destroy their relationship permanently.

In 2018, it was revealed that he was not Raymond Reddington but Ilya Koslov, who took over Reddington's identity over 30 years ago, likely after the real Reddington's death, when he was killed by Elizabeth Keen when she was 4 years old. The few who appear to have known the truth and know who Red really is appear to include Dembe Zuma, Kathryn Nemec, Dominic Wilkinson, Naomi Hyland, Sam Scott, Hans Koehler, and his former nurse Marguerite Renard. Others who have learned the truth (Ian Garvey, Sutton Ross, Diane Fowler, Peter Kotsiopulos) were killed for their knowledge. Recently, Donald Ressler and Harold Cooper learned the truth from Elizabeth.

It is later revealed that “Red” is in fact not Ilya Koslov, who is his close friend. This leaves his real identity unknown as well as his motivation for protecting Elizabeth, and how he is connected to Katarina Rostova, Ilya Koslov, and Dom. Reddington eventually reveals to Liz the truth in "Nachalo" that his identity as Raymond Reddington was in fact created by the real Katarina Rostova and Ilya Koslov with the intention of protecting Liz and that the woman that she knew as Katarina was not in fact the real Katarina Rostova who is still alive somewhere. In addition, the Sikorsky Archive is the true source of Reddington's Blacklist. In ”Konets”, Reddington is revealed to be present when a picture of a young Elizabeth and her mother was taken and that he was the person who knew Katarina better than anybody. He also states that if Liz knew who he really is, she'd never be able to kill him.

Season 1[]

Pilot[]

Outside the FBI building in Washington DC, he meets a Newton Phillips who gives him a briefcase and then walks into the building, asks for Assistant Director Harold Cooper and tells them his own name. He then walks to the seal set in the floor, removes his coat, jacket and hat, kneels and places his hands atop his head, then waits while the alarms sound and he is taken into custody.

The FBI case agent states they've confirmed he's Raymond Reddington by matching fingerprints and tattoos, as well as his knowledge about a former FBI attempt to kill him.

He is taken to the Post Office, where he says nothing until a chip is implanted in his shoulder. He then states he will only talk to Elizabeth Keen.

When she arrives he then relates part of her history, including some private details, and tells her that Beth Ryker, the daughter of General Daniel Ryker, will be kidnapped by a man named Ranko Zamani.

After Beth's kidnapping, he is taken to the operations room where he identifies other members of the kidnapping gang; including the Banker, the Innkeeper, and the Chemist. He has Liz logically work through the clues and figure out what is going on; to think like a criminal. (Zamani's story sounds very similar to the Farmer's story Red relates in “The Stewmaker”.)

For a further relaxation of his conditions of imprisonment he offers to help find the Chemist. The relaxation of conditions are no handcuffs and he will reside in an hotel of his choosing.

In his second meeting with Liz, he inquires about the scar on her hand. She tells him she received the scar in a fire when she was 14.

While at the hotel he is stabbed in the neck by Liz, who believes (correctly) that he had Tom Keen attacked by Zamani.

Once he has had treatment at the hospital, he escapes and meets Zamani, and plants his tracking chip on him. When Liz realizes that the bomb is to be detonated at the zoo, he sends a Ukrainian to defuse the bomb and waits to be recaptured.

While comforting the child Beth, Liz says her father gave her the scar on her hand when she was about Beth's age (around 4), contradicting what she told Red.

At a meeting with Cooper and Donald Ressler he states his conditions for giving the FBI the names of major criminals, which he dubs The Blacklist. His conditions are: He never sleeps in the same place more than two nights; He wants his own security detail; He will negotiate his own immunity deal and the he will only speak with Elizabeth.

The Freelancer[]

Red is now being held in an FBI secret prison which looks like an oil tanker. He is taken to Washington for a polygraph test, during which he states that a disaster will occur at the Decatur industrial park, that day at 11 A.M.

After the train crash, Red is brought to the FBI operations room, where he reveals the the crash was caused by an individual known as the Freelancer who disguises his assassinations as accidents. Red estimates that he has killed over 3,000 innocent civilians and compares his scale of carnage to terrorist organizations and governments. Red says that he cannot contact the Freelancer directly, but he does have an intermediary in Montreal.

In Montreal, Red and Elizabeth Keen talk in a restaurant until Red leaves the table and proceeds to exit the restaurant through the back door and wait in the RCMP/FBI control vehicle for the flustered agents. He reveals that his contact was the coat-check guy and that the intended target is Floriana Campo, a noted campaigner against human trafficking.

When the FBI realize that the only person who can identify the Freelancer is Red, his deal is signed, Dembe Zuma and Luli Zeng form his security detail. Meera Malik, a CIA agent, is added by Diane Fowler.

At the function Red identifies the Freelancer and the agents give chase. Taking advantage of the distraction Red heads for Floriana's room. Once there he reveals that he knows her and that she is the head of the Eberhardt Cartel, the largest human trafficking gang in the Eastern Hemisphere and one of the most vicious.

Liz then arrives and Red reveals that the Freelancer has poisoned Floriana and the if she admits her guilt he will give Liz the antidote. Floriana nods to agree to her guilt.

Next day Liz and Red are talking, Liz says that the FBI have checked Floriana's accounts and found that she was the leader of the cartel. She asks what would have occurred if the antidote had worked? Red replies that there was no antidote.

Wujing[]

Red is playing solo chess in a park when he is approached by a representative of Wujing requesting his assistance in decoding a message. Red explains that his usual contractor is unavailable, but Luli Zeng has details of a replacement and once due diligence is completed they will proceed as normal. Red then tells the representative that he “prefers to play with himself in private,” signalling for him to leave.

At his hatter Red meets Elizabeth Keen and explains that she is to pose as a cryptographer, and decode the name of an American agent for the Chinese spy killer Wujing. Liz is not happy with the idea but is eventually persuaded by the FBI to comply.

Red and Liz enter Wujing's bunker and are introduced to Jin Sun, Wujing's new cryptographer. The bunker is shielded and in order to get the information to the FBI, Liz needs to insert her mirroring USB key into Jin Sun's computer, so Red distracts everyone by pointing out one of the FBI surveillance vehicles. Once the message is decoded, but before they can leave, the transmission to the FBI is detected. The source of the contact to the FBI is identified as Jin Sun's computer, so Wujing beats Jin Sun. Jin Sun notices Liz's USB key, but before he can alert anyone, Red shoots him dead, telling Liz that he'll do anything to keep her alive.

Red, Liz, Wujing and the rest of his staff leave the bunker though a hidden exit and drive away. Wujing drops Red and Liz of at a place where Dembe Zuma collects them.

As Liz leaves she asks Red, why her? He says that it is because of her father. When she asks if he knew her father, he says that the answer is complicated.

The Stewmaker[]

Red hears about Liz's upcoming trial, and arranges a meeting to tell her that the defendant, Hector Lorca, has contacted him requesting a new identity. He also says that he has to travel to Haiti.

In Haiti while selling arms he receives a call from Liz updating him on the situation, and tells her to check the bath.

Back in Washington, Red tells the FBI what little he knows about the Stewmaker and suggests they pressure Lorca for information.

After Liz has been kidnapped, Red and Donald Ressler go to a meeting with Lorca, for Red to hand over his new identity and to get information about Liz. Before they enter the meeting Red warns Ressler that he will have to explain why he is accopmanying Red, since he should be attending alone. In the meeting Red tells Lorca that Ressler is an FBI agent. Ressler then tells Lorca that he is the person who arranged for the new identity. Lorca is reluctant to give any information about the Stewmaker, but when Red threatens not to hand over the identity he gives Red his contact information for the Stewmaker.

At the Post Office, Red notices the evidence of dog hair from the motel room and leaves the FBI to their investigation while he pursues his own investigation.

In his limousine with Dembe driving, and Luli Zeng sitting next to him, he speaks to Animal Control and persuades them to release the tracking information on Kornish's dog to him, and they head for the cabin. When they are near the cabin Red tells Dembe to stop at a shop to buy some meat.

Just as Liz is about to be killed, Red knocks out Kornish with a single punch. He then binds Kornish and checks that Liz is alright. Kornish's dog is seen enjoying a raw steak. Red talks to Kornish about a farmer who loses everything, and over time becomes the predator. He then tips Kornish into his vat of chemicals, just before the FBI arrive. He tells Ressler that Liz needs medical attention, and when Meera Malik asks what he is doing there, he replies that she is wearing a pretty blouse. While the FBI are securing the scene and attending to Liz, Red finds an album of Kornish's victims and removes one picture. As Liz is entering the ambulance she calls Red a monster and asks how he lives with himself, he replies that it is by keeping her alive. He gives Liz the album. As the ambulance drives away he tells Ressler that the album contains enough information to put Lorca and several others in prison.

At the end of the episode Red stands on a bridge looking at the picture he took from Kornish's album.

The Courier[]

Newton Phillips informs Red that Tommy Phelps will be making a delivery for 20,000,000 dollars shortly and wonders if they should intercept it. Red decides that it would be better to use the FBI as a strike force.

When Liz hears about the job she is initially skeptical, until Red tells her how much the package is worth.

Once the courier is captured and after watching the initial interrogation, Red tells Harold Cooper that he will need a doctor, as he always wondered if the rumours were true. When the FBI discover that the courier is impervious to pain, Red says that he may be able to find his safe house, assuming that the courier is still addicted to opium.

Red identifies the woman that Tommy Phelps took surveillance photographs of, as Laurence Dechambou, a night club owner and information broker.

After the arrest of Dechambou, Red tells Cooper that she was going to be the French version of him, so will tell them nothing. He says that if they release her, he will find the location where she left Seth Nelson. Cooper says to Red “If you screw me over on this...” to which Red interjects “I'll consider it a bonus”.

Red meets Dechambou at her club and in return for a flight out of the country she tells Red what he wants to know.

Back at the Post Office with Liz and Dembe, they deduce where Seth is being held and Dembe drives them there.

At the site, Red says that Phelps would have buried the refrigerator containing Seth and finds a patch of clear ground where they should dig.

As Seth is being loaded into the ambulance he has a whispered conversation with Red.

At his current abode, Newton Phillips says to Red that he wasted his 1 question, Red says that he is betting on the long term.

Gina Zanetakos[]

Red is ensconced in an apparently deserted house where he is negotiating the sale of an Old Master painting. During the negotiation Newton Phillips receives a call regarding the situation with Liz and Tom Keen.

Red meets with Liz in front of the White House, where he tells her about corporate terrorist Gina Zanetakos whom he claims is Tom's lover, and who is in the country. He also tells Liz that last time he had contact with Gina, she was using the alias Shubie Hartwell.

When Red next meets Liz he is more interested in Tom's situation than the ongoing investigation. Liz vehemently defends her husband and leaves.

At their next meeting Liz has been tasked with asking Red to find Max Ruddiger and, through him, Gina Zanetakos for the FBI. Red reminisces about Max.

He flies to Germany accompanied by Dembe where meets with Max, who is initially reluctant to help, but Red gets him drunk and offers a Syrian contract so Max tells what he knows. Max does not know the target, just the time of detonation. He calls Gina so that the FBI can trace her.

After the bomb is dealt with, an angry Liz visits Red and tells him that Gina denied knowing Tom and that he can “go to hell”. Red does not say anything; he just sighs once she leaves.

Frederick Barnes[]

Because Elizabeth Keen is not taking his calls due to her belief about his involvement in Tom Keen's troubles, Red calls the tip line to tell Liz he knows who caused the biological attack. Liz and Donald Ressler meet Red at his tailor and he briefs them on Frederick Barnes.

At a meeting with Harold Cooper, Ressler, Liz, and Meera; Red learns that Strontium-90 was used in the bomb's detonator. He says that he has a contact for Strontium-90 and he might be able to use him to get a lead on Barnes. As the contact lives in Cuba, Red says that he will have to fly to meet him. He invites Liz to accompany him, but she refuses. When he enters his car he says to Luli Zeng that he hopes she has good news as it has been a very depressing morning. Luli tells him that something he has been looking for has come on the market. He is pleased and tells her to proceed.

In Cuba, Red meets his contact Manny and when Manny won't divulge the name of the Strontium-90 buyer, he bugs his office and makes an offer for some of the material. As expected, Manny refuses and when Red leaves, calls Barnes. Through the bug Dembe is able to trace the call and Red calls Liz with Barnes' location.

After Liz lets Barnes go, she calls Red. He tells her that he is not a gumball machine and hangs up. When Liz calls back and says she needs his help, he makes her repeat the request before suggesting that he would see the survivor of the courthouse attack as a failure and be certain to visit her.

Outside the Forrester home Red confronts Liz and tells her that if she says the word, he will disappear for ever. When Liz scoffs at the idea, he points out that disappearing was a service he offered to many people. He repeats his offer, but when Liz does not reply, he says that he will see her tomorrow.

He, along with Dembe and Luli take a tour of the house purchased by Luli. Red reminisces about family life in the house before leaving. As they leave an explosion set by Dembe destroys the house.

General Ludd[]

At a meeting with Harold Cooper, Red says that to assist the FBI in this case he wants access to the FBI's ViCAP (Violent Criminal Apprehension Program) system. Red tells Cooper that he is not a consultant, and he give the FBI cases, not the other way round. With prompting from Liz he agrees, and Red tells them that Nathaniel Wolff is the leader of the anonymous terrorist organization, General Ludd. The FBI do not believe him, as CCTV footage of the bombing suspect does not match Wolff's photograph.

Red is meeting with his counterfieter when Liz tracks him down to tell him that they suspect Wolff of having cosmetic surgery. Red wants to talk about Liz's father, but when she is not forthcoming he tells her that Dr. Abraham Maltz is the best cosmetic surgeon for the type of work Wolff would have required.

Red visits Dr. Maltz with Liz, when he initially refuses to divulge Wolff's new name; Liz says that she is an FBI agent and threatens him with a FBI raid. Maltz reveals that Wolff's new name is Bradley Holland. When Maltz queries Red about him working with the FBI, Red says that there was no proof that Liz was an FBI agent, and that he is appalled at how Maltz gave up the information in the face of a few forceful threats.

Red then goes to Nebraska to visit Sam, Liz's adopted father. In their discussion Red learns that Sam has only about 6 weeks to live. Sam tells Red that he would have preferred it if they had said 6 hours. Sam also tells red that he wants to tell Liz something. Red says that he can't allow that. Sam calls Liz to say goodbye, then Red smothers him with a pillow.

Outside, Red sits next to Tom Keen and talks about Liz to him, without revealing who he is. Red tells Tom that Liz is stronger than he thinks and that her father will always be watching over her.

While returning to Washington on board his private plane, Red receives a call from Liz asking about Wolff's escape. Red says that if you the right people, all things are possible and he points out that his plane is not grounded. After he hangs up, Red tells Dembe to inform that pilot that they will be making an unscheduled stop.

At a remote airfield, he and Dembe intercept Wolff. Red states that he wants capitalism to survive and steals the hard drive containing the program for the new 100 dollar banknote design. As they walk away, Red tells Dembe to send Wolff's aircraft tail number to Keen.

At the Post Office, Red is given access to ViCAP and enters the numbers he received from Wujing. The numbers refer to a young woman named Lucy Brooks.

At Mary's house Liz tries to talk to Red about the missing hard drive, but he changes the subject to Sam and gets her to talk about him.

Anslo Garrick[]

Red is celebrating the completion of a business deal with Luli Zeng, Max Ruddiger and several others in a Munich bierkeller when he sees Donald Ressler approaching. Red intercepts him and explains to the assembled guests that Donald is his man in the State Department, who he has invited to join them. Ressler says that Elizabeth Keen has been detained and the reason is above his security clearance, but she needs his help in Washington.

When Red, Luli and Dembe enter the Post Office, they are handcuffed and separated. Harold Cooper explains that they have credible intelligence that an assassination attempt will be made on Red's life and he is now in protective custody. When he hears the evidence that Meera Malik has collated, Red immediately states that the information is false, probably sourced through an informant within the team. The purpose is to have him in a known location from where he can be captured or killed. As he is saying this, gunfire is a heard. Red says “They're in”. Cooper orders Ressler to take Red to the box. As he is being led away Red tells Cooper to evacuate the building.

On the way to the box, they are attacked by one of Garrick's men who shoots Ressler in the leg, who Ressler manages to shoot before collapsing in pain. Red uncuffs himself and kills their attacker before heading to the box with Ressler. Ressler sets the box to delayed closure while Red collects some medical supplies. They enter the box and it closes as Garrick arrives.

Red starts to treat Ressler's wound while Garrick taunts him from outside, including how Ressler nearly assassinated Red in Brussels based on information supplied by Garrick. Red responds by taunting Garrick about his face where he was shot by Red.

Garrick tires of taunting Red, and has Cooper and the rest of the prisoners brought to them. He threatens to shoot Cooper unless he opens the box, but Red talks him out of it.

Garrick then brings Luli to the box, where he puts a gun to her head and threatens to shoot her unless Red opens the box. When Red is unable to open the box Garrick kills Luli. He then begins the same routine with Dembe, Red realizes that Ressler knows the code, but Ressler has fainted. Dembe and Red recite the Al-Ikhlas, then Garrick puts a gun to Dembe's head and the screen fades to black as a gunshot is heard.

Anslo Garrick: Conclusion[]

When Anslo Garrick sees Red's reaction to Liz's capture, he lets go of Dembe and puts the gun to Liz's head. Red puts a loaded gun to Ressler's head and forces him to reveal the code to open the box. Red exits the box leaving the gun beside Ressler.

Anslo then implements the next stage of his plan, which is to leave the Post Office through the sewer system taking Red and Liz with him and the mercenary team.

In the ambulance Red gives Liz contact information for Kathryn Nemec, just before she escapes and Anslo's people remove his chip.

Red is taken to another abandoned building where he is suspended by his arms from a beam. Anslo explains to Red that he is to be prepared for questioning. A doctor arrives and injects Red with drugs that will heighten his sensitivity to pain. To check that the drug is working Anslo starts beating Red.

After some time, Red is taken down and sat in a chair. While he is being manhandled Red takes a pair of scissors from the doctor's pocket.

Alan Fitch sits opposite Red and questions him about his arrangement with the FBI, telling him that he is concerned that this may break their deal. Red assures him that their deal is still valid. Fitch tells Red to be careful, as he could have had Red snatched from anywhere, but he chose the Post Office to prove his power. Red reminds Fitch that his information will be distributed at his death, Fitch says that is why Red has been allowed to live for the past 20 years. Fitch then leaves.

A short time later Anslo returns and tells Red that he is going to kill him, and then he is going to go after Liz. Red grunts and Anslo asks if Red is feeling something, Red mumbles and Anslo leans in close. Red then stabs him in the back of the neck with the scissors and says “regret”.

Red is next seen in a phone booth calling Liz where he tells her that he'll be away for a while, but if she needs help he'll be there. He also tells her to be careful of her husband. When Liz asks Red if he is her father, he pauses and then says no.

The Good Samaritan[]

Red looks at the body of Luli Zeng in her coffin and asks Newton Phillips to make the arrangements for her ashes.

Red then tracks down, catches and interrogates the remaining watcher, the paramedic who removed his chip and the doctor who injected him. Their bodies are then dumped in various locations about the city.

Red calls Elizabeth Keen at home and suggests that she concentrates on The Good Samaritan's victims instead of trying to profile him.

Red then goes after the banker for the raid and begins by interrogating, then killing, a club owner called Fyodor. He then speaks to Henry Krueger outside his home and demands his records for the raid.

Red has Aram Mojtabai kidnapped and brought to him. He threatens to shoot Aram unless he can untraceably steal 5,000,000 dollars from one specified account and put it into another specified account. When Aram completes the task, Red tells him that he could not be the mole as he would not have accepted payment in a way that could be easily traced to him.

Red returns to Henry's house and this time charms his way inside. shoots Henry in the leg, puts his wife in a closet and learns that the payment was made to Newton Phillips.

Red spreads Luli's ashes onto a lake, and then asks Newton Phillips why he betrayed him. Newton Phillips responds that they threatened his family. Red says he will look after Newton Phillips's family and then suffocates him with a plastic bag.

Red goes to Liz's home while Tom Keen is away and tells her that there is a mole in the FBI. He also says that he will give her the next name on The Blacklist.

The Alchemist[]

Red tells Liz that the next person on The Blacklist is known as the Alchemist, a person who protects the guilty by killing the innocent. He also tells Liz that the Alchemist's next clients are Pytor and Catherine Madrcyzk.

Red meets with an organization of hacktivists who have amassed a large amount of shredded government information and tells him to re-assemble the documents in an effort to discover the mole.

When Liz tells Red that the Madrcyzk's have been confirmed killed in an aircraft crash, he tells Liz that he has heard rumors that the Alchemist uses synthetic DNA and false dental records to convince the authorities that his clients have died. He also tells Liz where to find Pytor Madrcyzk.

When Elizabeth Keen calls and tells him about the torn and burnt piece of paper he prompts her to think about laboratory equipment.

When Liz calls about help in locating Trettel after he has kidnapped his wife and child, Red replies that she needs to focus on the wife and daughter. He is then shown a memo signed by Meera Malik indicating she is the mole.

After Liz gives him Eric Trettel's client list, she asks if Red wanted the list to locate a single person.

He is waiting in Meera's appartment when she arrives home. He asks if she knows why he is there, and she replies that he is there to kill her because she is the mole.

The Cyprus Agency[]

Red meets with Liz in the synagogue he has been laying low in to bring her case on the Cyprus Adoption Agency, an adoption agency he accuses of stealing infants from their birth mothers to give to other parents looking to adopt.

Later, Red enters an abandoned building and encounters a man named Teddy Brimley to was vetting the captured Agent Malik, proclaiming her to be “cleaner that a duck fart.” Reddington hires Malik to find who issued the orders for Malik to start a bidding process on improving the site's security.

After DNA tests yield no results, Liz goes to Red for help on the case. Red tells her to check for relatives of the children, reminding Liz that “not every missing child is on the back of a milk carton.” Red later takes Liz to the house of a drug dealer named Russell for information on Hydroxipam sales.

Red waits inside Diane Fowler's home after learning from Malik's findings that Fowler was the one who let Anslo Garrick into the Post Office. While dying from being shot by Red, Diane claims to know the truth of what happened to Reddington's family 20 years ago, and asks if he wants to know what happened. Red says yes, but that, if Diane knows the truth, “then someone else does as well.” He then shoots and kills Diane and calls Nemec to cover up the murder.

Madeline Pratt[]

Red meets with Madeline Pratt at a bar after she stole from Red's safety deposit box in Istanbul. Pratt tells Red of her desire to Effigy of Atargatis from the Syrian Embassy. Red later brings Pratt to the attention of the task force, sending them on a race against Pratt for the Effigy, which is rumored to contain the names of the “Kungur 6”, Soviet agents from the Cold War that are still active and unknown to the US government.

Red takes Liz to hotel room where they will be with Pratt, with Liz under the guise of a thief wanting to steal the Effigy. Red later joins Liz at the embassy, where they are set up by Pratt. After Liz is captured by security, Red talks his way into the room she is held in and knocks out the guard, the two then escaping.

Red meets with Pratt in the city, when the two are captured by an unknown party and held in a makeshift prison, where Red is taken away multiple times by the guards, only to come back to his cell in even poorer shape. This continues until Pratt agrees to give the location of the Effigy and the warheads of the Kungur 6. The information is then handed to Red, revealing that he had set up the capture and prison as a way of deceiving Pratt into giving him the information the FBI needed.

While the FBI are sent to find the Effigy, Red finds the locations of the Cold War nuclear warheads that were supposed to be listed in the Effigy. In a meeting with Harold Cooper, Red agrees to give the warheads to the FBI, in return for the Effigy.

When he returns to his temporary house, he finds that Pratt has stolen a painting as revenge.

The Judge[]

Red meets with the Cowboy in a car, employing his services to find out where Lucy Brooks has been for the past 6 months and what she has been doing in that time.

At the Post Office, Red tells Liz that Hastings' reappearance indicates that a figure known only as “the Judge”, a supposed prison myth, is responsible. The Judge responds to prisoners' requests for justice against those in the legal system who wrongfully convicted them.

The Cowboy brings Red what he found in Brooks' apartment; false identities, evidence of several trips abroad, foreign currency, and a USB flash drive. Red notices that Brooks has been to all the places he has been since he surrendered to the FBI.

When Cooper is captured by the Judge for beating Rifkin in order to get his confession, Liz has Red find any information on the Rifkin case, leading Red to visit Admiral Richard Abraham, who is not happy to see Red after his disappearance and treason ruined Abraham's career.

Red is sent to meet with the Judge in her makeshift prison to bring her new information on the Rifkin case, proving that Rifkin was indeed guilty of massacring a village with the Taliban and was rightfully convicted. He states that executing Cooper would violate the ideals of justice that she has been attempting to uphold.

Red later meets with Cooper, telling him that “a war is coming” and that he expects Cooper to remember what Red did for him that day when Red depends on his help in the future. He also requests that Cooper aid Abraham in reviving his naval career.

Mako Tanida[]

While Red awaits results from the Cowboy regarding his investigation into Lucy Brooks, Red makes a donation to a ballet production. He later provides speculative information to Donald Ressler regarding Mako Tanida, a former suspect Ressler arrested during his 5 year pursuit against Reddington. Red's suspicions were proven correct when another member of Ressler's former task force was murdered. Red later re-assigns the Cowboy to capture Lucy. When hearing of Audrey's death, a sympathetic Reddington provides a lead to a vengeful Ressler towards a residential house serving as an underground hospital. However, he warns Ressler that vengeance requires a high price.

Reddington later hears word of Tanida's escape from captivity, and later kills Tanida, shipping his decapitated head to a mourning Ressler. Red watches the ballet production, imagining a time his daughter was actually the leading star of the same production he funded.

Ivan[]

Throughout the episode, Red is working at a worktable, renovating a clockwork mechanism.

When Red hears of a NSA analyst being killed in a car crash and the theft of the “Skeleton Key”, a prototype cyberwarfare weapon capable of disabling a nation-state's electronic infrastructure, he initially suspects Ivan, a skilled Russian hacker known for making numerous cyber attacks against the Russian economy. While getting Ivan out of Russia, he discovers that Ivan had nothing to do with the theft of the Skeleton Key, and that someone else is impersonating him. Red uses the opportunity to force Ivan to return the 5,000,000 dollars that Ivan had stolen from his accounts, in addition another 3,000,000 dollars is demanded as interest.

Later, Liz goes to Red for information on Lucy Brooks, demanding to know who she was and why she inserted herself into her life. Red refuses to answer.

After Liz finally discovers the truth of Tom's status as a spy, she goes to Red for comfort. Red plays the song that Liz's father used to sing to her to calm her down with the music box he had been constructing throughout the episode.

Milton Bobbit[]

In order to give Liz a cover story for her un-official investigation into Tom, he supplies her with information about a recent assassination arranged by Milton Bobbit.

The Pavlovich Brothers[]

The Kingmaker[]

After Emil Dusek had been framed by the Kingmaker, he realized that Milos Kirchoff was increasing the campaign to destroy him. This causes Niko Demakis to reveal that his black market allies are wavering in their support.

Red spends the episode dividing his time between aiding the FBI and attempting to persuade/threaten Alan Fitch into giving him support. After Elizabeth Keen tells him that the Kingmaker was killed, he throws his glass in the fireplace. Later Liz confronts him over the death of her adoptive father, and in keeping with his promise not to lie to her, he tells her what happened.

Berlin[]

Reddington and Dembe are on Red’s airplane and Dembe gets a call from one of the people he had tracking Tom Keen. Dembe tells Red that the tracker lost Tom. Red looks back to what he was reading, a math textbook, Dembe asks Red how bad is it? and Red says worse that he thought.

Elizabeth walks into Harold Cooper’s office and hands him her letter of resignation. Red is sitting in the corner and says he has a case that is urgent. Elizabeth says that Red will have to work with someone else. Elizabeth says that Red killed her father. Cooper says he wants to speak to Liz privately and Red says no. Red says the case has to do with Tom and an attack is imminent. Liz says that he should get whatever Reddington knows or detain him indefinitely. Cooper asks if this is about Berlin. Liza begs him to accept the resignation. Red asks Liz if she is going to put her anger with him above the lives of innocent people. Liz says she will do the case and then she is done.

Red and other members of the task force are in the operations room at the Post Office. Red tells them that a man names Paul Blankenship died at the Westland Bank in Manhattan. Red says that the likely cause of death was believed to be the Cullen virus. Ressler says that the man was an armored truck driver. Red says he didn’t randomly become infected with this virus and thinks it was done as part of a larger plot involving himself and the task force. Mira asks how a random bank has to do with him. Red said that threats on his life are a constant but two days ago he received word that a biological threat could be coming. Red says he thinks its part of a larger plot against him. Red says that he thinks Paul was a foot soldier in a biological army meant to carry out orders by a superior through the use of one of the deadliest viruses on the planet. Red says he doesn’t know how all the dots connect but he doesn’t think that Paul dying was part of it.

Red and Liz are at a mental institution to meet with a Dr. Sanders who has continued to do research. Dr Sanders seems a bit off and with the conversation he has with Red they have a history of working together. Dr Sanders remembers that someone came to him asking about Cullen research. From the discussion Red has with Dr Sanders it is said that he injected himself with meningitis and then a synthesized cure and it has side effects. Dr Sanders remembers that the person that came to meet with him had the name Space Agent UD 4126. Once they leave the room Liz goes off on Red for this wild goose chase. She thinks that they only flew here so that Red could try and change her mind to leave on the flight. Liz asks Red if he’s ever had a selfless moment in his life. She storms off saying she’s going to the airport to fly back on her own.

After Liz has a brief meeting with Ressler and Malik she learns that Dr Sander isn’t as off about the virus as she thought and she needs to go back to speak to him again. She meets with Red in a park to ask for his help because Dr Sanders won’t speak to her.

Liz and Red are back at the hospital were Dr Sanders is a patient. They ask for the identity of UD 4126. Dr Sanders says that is his name. Liz pushes Dr Sanders for the person identity and he has a break down. Liz sees something and leaves, Red asks her what she saw but she doesn’t say anything.

Liz shows up in the park and tell Red that he needs to come with her and get in the car now. Red asks what she’s done. After a brief cut away to Berlin’s plan coming together it goes back to Red and Liz in the park. Liz tells Red that they voided his agreement and he doesn’t have immunity. Red asks if she set the meeting so they could capture him. Red asks Liz if she’s here now because she sensed this meeting was a mistake. Liz says there is no time. Red says she wants to hear from Agent Keen and tells Dembe to wait in the vehicle. Red sits down on a bench and tells Liz to tell him about her change of heart. It again cuts way to a scene showing Berlin’s plan continuing as planned. It goes back to Liz and Red in the park. Red asks her what changed. Liz asks if he wants to spend the rest of his life in solitary. Red said it doesn’t matter. Red exclaims that this is about Sam. Liz says she’s not going to forgive him for killing her father. Red says that this is where it ends. Liz says she knowns that Berlin is a person and is coming from him. Liz says the police are on their way. Red says they’re already here as sirens pull up. Red asks what can they really do to him that hasn’t already been done before, he adds that none of it is worse than loosing her. Red pulls out a revolver and points it at Liz asking her to excuse it as he doesn’t want them to think they’re working together. Liz says she he doesn’t get to have it her way. Red tells her she should go. They both tell each other they each have answers they can’t get without the other. Liz says they seem to be stuck together. As FBI closing in around them telling him put the gun down.

Red tells her a story about falling ill after being stung by a Lionfish. He said he knew he was dying and readied himself for death. He said in the moment standing at deaths door was a sea gypsy just standing and smiling at him. He said they nursed him back to health and when he left the island, she kissed him on the cheek and it nearly made dying worth it. Red says that is how he feels now.

Red stands up and puts the gun in Liz’s hand and gets down on his knees and surrenders himself to the Agents. As Berlin’s airplane passes by overhead, on fire, crashing towards the East River.

Berlin: Conclusion[]

Red is escorted by FBI Agent Martin into a metal cage at a black site. Agent Martin tells Reddington he is going to disappear and doesn’t have to worry about a immunity. He asks Red if Agent Keen was worth being captured. Red deflects by asking if he uses Brylcreme in hair. Agent Martin walks away and Red says yes. Agent Martin responds by saying yes what. Red says yes, the girl was worth it.

Red is still in the cage and Alan Fitch comes to talk to him. He wonders if the plane crash is connected to Red’s adversary. Alan says that his people made a decision, even if he thinks it’s the wrong one. Alan tells Red that he arranged a transfer, Red says he can handle the rest. Alan tells Red that he wonders each time he sees him if it will be last and that this may be that last time.

Red is put into the back of an FBI Tahoe and Agent Martin is already in the back seat. Red tells him of course it would be you, because lady luck just adores me that much. Agent Martin says for the record, Fitch ordered me to do this, I hope you’re killed in the attempt. The vehicle begins driving. Agent Martin says that Red only gets 2 shots at his jaw so make it count because if he isn’t knocked out Red is getting a bullet in the temple. Red responds with he’s never been one to shy away from a challenge and takes 1 shot and knocks Agent Martin out then wraps his cuffs around the neck of the driver who then crashes. Red escapes.

Red gets to a payphone and warns Liz that the agents on the task force are the targets.

Liz joins red at home and tells Red that Meera is dead. Liz asks Red why they are all targets. Red says that the day we met you asked me why I surrender myself to the FBI, there were many reasons, one of them was Berlin. That’s why he’s here, because the work they have done has forced him out of the shadows. Red says that Berlin cannot allow the task force to continue. Red says that Meera was a casualty in a war she didn’t even know she was fighting. He said that just by association he made them all targets. Liz says that it was Tom, that the info Berlin has on the task force had to have come from Tom. Liz says that even Sam’s name was in the book. Liz asks Red how Sam could have been involved. Red says that its all pieces to a larger puzzle and until all the pieces are laying in front of you it won’t go together. Red says that what he does know is that Sam’s involvement in this is that he was your father, and no one can pervert that. Red says that Berlin wasn’t the only person on the plane and whoever wanted him here wanted the others as well.

Cooper asks Ressler to ask Red to meet the Russian ambassador. It then cuts to the Ambassador walking into his own home where Red is waiting, holding the man’s dog, Tuzik. Red asks him for the manifest for the plane. The ambassador claims that the plane has no ties to the Russian Government. Red officers him a peach that he is cutting up. Red says he wants to know who the prisoners are. The ambassador swears that if Red hurts his dog. Red says he’s not a monster and wont touch the dog. Red then throws the knife across the room at the ambassador hitting him in the leg. Red walks over and pulls the knife out and says but you on the other hand.

Red is sitting with Alan Fitch and hands him a folder, he says Berlin’s name is Milos Pavel Kinsky, and that he is Russian and a former Spetsnaz commando, trained in the KGB’s 45 division. Red says that organized crime is now his fancy. Alan says that he makes Putin look like a Christmas Elf. Alan asks Red, now that he knows who he is what did he do to put him in such a bad mood, Red says he is curious as well. Alan asks Red why he’s here and Red says he wants access that file at even the FBI doesn’t have. The satellites that recorded everyone’s info. Red asks Alan to find him and he will take care of the rest. Alan says he heard about Harold, Red asks Alan to find him and walks out.

Liz gets into Reds car and says that they don’t know if Harold is going to make it through the night. She tells Red that he still hasn’t told her how Sam was involved. Red says that the way Sam told the story was that one night an old friend showed up at his door, scared, the friend said he was leaving town because he was in danger and he needed someone to take care of a little girl and the girls father had died that night in a fire. So Sam took the little girl in and raised her as his own, sheltering her from the truth about her biological father, Liz asks if that’s why he killed him. Red says that he killed him because he was in pain and he wanted to die and to protect her from the truth. Liz says the only memory she has of her father is the night of the fire when he pulled her from the fire. Red says yes. Red says that knowing his identity would put her in grave danger. Liz asks if that’s because he’s a fugitive on the most wanted list. Red says he loved Sam, taking his life out of all the difficult that he’s done that Sam was the most difficult, but he did it to protect her and having done all that he isn’t going to tell her now. Alan calls giving Red the address for Berlin. Liz asks Red if that was his source and Red says yes. Liz asks if he found Berlin and Red says that he will have to keep looking.

Red shows up at the address Alan gave him. Red kills the 2 guards outside. Along with 2 more inside. He finds Berlin upstairs and confronts him.

Red ties Berlin to a chair and tells him he’s very good at finding people and remembering those people because his life depends on it. He says he doesn’t just know their name but their wives, children, even their favorite bartender and their butcher. Red tells Berlin he has no idea in the world who he is or what he’s done to him and no one has come after him with the vim and vigor that he has. Berlin tells him he found him through his weakness, Agent Keen. Red asks him who he is and Berlin spits in his face. Red shoots him in the hand. Red tells Berlin to tell him his story, and that he’s not leaving here without a story. Berlin doesn’t say anything and then shoots him in the hip. Red asks Berlin about shooting him in the kneecap. Berlin tells him Beruit in 2010, Red asks if it was the Campolongo incident. The door opens and Tom walks in with Liz as a hostage he tells Red to slide the gun now. Red says no. Red asks if Liz is hurt, she shakes her head no. Berlin starts telling Tom to kill Liz repeatedly. Red shoots Berlin in the head, killing him. Red puts his gun town and tells Tom to do the same before he does something they’ll regret. Red says when he gets over there, he’s taking the gun from him. Red beings walking towards Tom and Tom shoots at Red. Liz turns and begins struggling for the gun with Tom and the gun goes off hitting Tom in the stomach. Tom is dazed and tries walking towards Liz and Liz shoots him two more times in the same spot. Red walks over and points his gun at Tom’s head and says we can’t leave him alone. Liz says she will handle it and Red leaves saying he will be waiting outside. Tom tells Liz he’s sorry and whispers something to him. Tom then closes his eyes and appears to have died.

Liz shows up at Red’s place to tell him that the guy he killed wasn’t Berlin. Red says he knows. Red references the incident that Berlin mentioned in Beruit in 2010, the Campologo incident, Red says that Berlin’s attacks begin long before that and he needs the advantage of Berlin thinking that Red thinks he’s dead. Red says that he needs Liz to know that the night Sam took her in he made a tough choice that changed his life forever. Red says that Liz is facing a similar choice and if she wants to turn away and run from it, and if she chooses to do that he will fly away. Red says that if she chooses to face it and she prevails she can rise above it. Liz gives Red a look and Red says he understands; he’ll be on a plane tonight.

Dembe is loading Red’s things into his car with Red. Liz arrives in a taxi. Red and Liz stare at each other for a bit and then go inside. They are sitting on the stairs and Liz tells Red what Tom whispered to her before he died. Liz said that he told her here father is still alive. Red tells Liz to look at her, he says that he can tell her with no uncertainty that her father is dead, that he died in that fire. Liz says that man Berlin is still out there. Red says yes, he is, and we will find him.

Red is alone in his house and he looks at the photo that he took out of the Stemakers book of trophies. Red then takes his shirt off to tend to the bullet wound where he was grazed on his arm. When Red’s shirt comes down it reveals Red has burn scars across his entire back.

Red interrogates Isabella Stone in an industrial freezer for the information on who sent her after him. Isabella Stone says Reddington had her husband, Gavin Pruitt, killed when he was captured by police. Harold Cooper calls Reddington and demands for him to return Stone to their custody and Red tells him he plans too when he’s finished.

Red continues his interrogation of Isabella Stone and tells her that when the police came after Gavin Pruitt and asked him about how he knew Reddington he only cared about his family. Reddington tells Isabella that he helped Gavin walk away from his family to protect the innocence of his family.

Isabella Stone tells Reddington that she received an anonymous package containing every aspect of information about Reddington’s operation. Isabella wants to know where Gavin is. Reddington tells her that he is married again and remembers her as she was and refuses to tell her anything about his whereabouts stating that it would be devastating to him.

Red comes to the Post Officer looking from Aram. Elizabeth asks Reddington if he knows where they are holding Black Mass. Reddington says that its urgent and needs to speak to Aram. Elizabeth tells him that Aram is at the Black Mass.

Reddington tells Harold Cooper the location of Isabella Stone. Harold asks if she told him who paid her to attack him. Reddington says that she only told him that they share the same bank and the bank guarantee’s absolute privacy to its customers and that he was looking for Aram’s assistance in pulling back that veil of secrecy.

Reddington arrives at a house where a man Reddington calls David is having a portrait being painted of himself by an artist named Palpetto. Reddington tells David that he wants the information contained on a stick that he has that will tell him who paid Isabella Stone to come after him. David refuses to cooperate and tells him to get out. David tells him that Reddington knows the information is private.

Reddington and Dembe get into the back seat of Palpetto’s vehicle. Reddington can’t think of the word in Italian for kidnapping. Dembe happens to know it but doesn’t know anything else in Italian.

David comes back home and finds Palpetto painting a portrait of Reddington in his living room. Reddington tells David that Palpetto is painting over David’s portrait. Reddington tells David that he’s going to put a bullet in Palpetto’s head if David doesn’t give him the name of the person who has declared war on his interests. David caves and tells Reddington to give him the stick and he will look into it asked Redington not to kill Palpetto.

Reddington is at the Post Officer and walks into Coopers office. Reddington says he is troubled that Harold is dissatisfied with the results of our efforts. Harold says that doing good for selfish reasons does not make you good. it just makes you good at being selfish. Reddington says that he is sorry about Harold’s Daughter and that Harold has seemed anxious as of late. Reddington also says that when someone you love is sick you don’t need to shoulder that burden alone. Harold says his daughter is not a burden and she is his greatest blessing and that she is none of Reddington’s business. Harold also says, you want to know why those closest to you betray you? Why you are alone and being hunted? It is because even when you try to do something good you cannot seem to understand where your selfishness ends and other people’s lives begin. Harold then leaves the room saying that he’s going home to those that love him.

Dembe then gives Reddington the phone and says its David Levine. David accuses Reddington of giving him a test of loyalty. Reddington tells him to give him the name. David says the money came from Reddington’s own accounts.

The Apothecary[]

Dembe comes to Reddington and asks if Reddington is sure about this and that bringing them all together in one location is dangerous as he pours Reddington a glass. Reddington tells Dembe that on of our most trusted confidants intends to irrevocable damage to the organization. Dembe tells him its dangerous but Reddington says there’s a traitor in the family and he intends to find them.

It cuts to 9 hours later where Reddington is waking up in his “code 77” medical facility and remembers pieces of the dinner he was planning. The new doctor who identifies himself as Dr Havercamp, says that he heard Reddington likes information to be delivered frank and unvarnished and Doctor Havercamp tells Reddington that he’s dying and they believe he has been poisoned. During the conversation Reddington asks for Dembe but he tells him he doesn’t know who that is and whoever dropped him off left when he became stable. Reddington climbs out of the bed and calls Elizabeth Keen.

Reddington and Elizabeth walk into the Post Office and tell the team that he’s been poisoned and is dying. Reddington tells them that it is someone in his organization who has access to an offshore account that was used to fund recent attacks against him. Reddington says that 11 people have access to that account and called them all to dinner last night to confront them. Reddington says he only remembers pieces of the dinner. He can not remember where it was and only remembers pieces of the restaurant. Reddington tells them that being in a hospital is pointless and only has a day, maybe 2, left. Reddington asks them to find a pharmaco-toxicologist who he believes created the cocktail. He says the man goes by the name “The Apothecary”. Reddington steers them towards the head of a crime family to find the apothecary because his key witness in his Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act case just fell into a deep coma. Reddington leaves saying he needs to find/save Dembe.

Reddington shows up at the hospital that Doctor Havercamp works at. The Doctor does not like that Reddington showed up and says that he was promised discretion. Reddington asks how he got there, and Doctor Havercamp says that he got the text and showed up at the location. Reddington asks who dropped him off and he said it could have been Dembe, Reddington described Dembe and Doctor Havercamp says that he believes it was him. The Doctor says that he was driven there in a green station wagon. Red breaks into the same vehicle and searches around it then hotwires it.

Red then goes to a house that he got from the insurance card in the vehicle. Red finds a woman trapped in a car trunk in the garage. The woman says that he was the one that locked her in the trunk. The woman ends up helping Red when he drops from his poison. Red tries to put back the events of the night before. The woman, who says her name is Lou Lou, said that Red was in the apartment across the hall and then she went over there. She said that when she told Red she was going to call police he said that she was coming with them if she was going to call them. Lou Lou tells Red that the person living in that apartment is Marvin Gerard.

Raymond searches Marvin’s apartment and hears a voicemail he left saying they were all waiting at “John’s”, Lou Lou tells Red that is a restaurant downtown. Red goes to “John’s” and finds all his “confidants” locked in a room at the restaurant. They tell Red that he locked them in the room and sent all the staff home. They tell Red that he was giving a speech about someone in the room betraying them and one person not being present, Marvin. David is about to drink some wine and Red smacks it out of his hand saying it might be how he was poison. Someone else in the room tells Red that his wine was poured from a different bottle and she gets it from the counter. The bottle has a note from Marvin apologizing for not being able to attend. Red calls Elizabeth who tells him they found the Apothecary, Red tells Elizabeth that a bottle is on the way in case he isn’t helpful.

Red is in his “code 77” medical facility and Baz and Glen are there who tell him they found Marvin. Red gives them an address to bring him too.

Red begins questioning Marvin about betraying him. Marvin says that he was on the way to Tahiti for a yoga retreat they found the year before when Red sent him down there after freeing him from prison. Elizabeth calls telling him that the bottle was clean and that was not how he was poisoned. Elizabeth tells Red it had to come from something with higher alcohol content. Red has flashbacks to Dembe pouring him his scotch that morning and the realization that Dembe might have been the culprit.

Red is at the Post Office speaking with the team about what he might know about Dembe. Harold mentions that it has been a month since Dembe went missing after Red’s poisoning. Harold wants to know where Dembe has been and when Red asks why Harold tells him that Dembe abducted Aram. Red appears confused but says they don’t need to worry about Aram because Dembe must have taken a calculated risk to take him so he can use him. When Elizabeth asks Red if he is any closer to finding Dembe Red says he is now. Red tells them how adept Dembe is and that Red has taught him everything about evading and surviving. Red says he hasn’t been able to find anything on Dembe’s whereabouts. Red suggests he will find Dembe and the team finds Aram and they will meet in the middle. Harold says no and says Elizabeth will go with Red.

Red and Elizabeth are in the back of his car and Red says they need to go to the Sanctum Corporation. Red says they specialize in relocating criminals that are in danger of being arrested or dispatched by adversaries. Red says that he told Dembe to hide his daughter and granddaughter last year when Matias Solomon used them to get to Dembe. Red said he told Dembe to not tell him who he uses to hide them to keep them away from his world. Red says that Sanctum is the last one on his list but has no idea how to locate them. Red says he might have a lead through someone that Sanctum set up wi th a men’s suits business. Red looks out the window and sees a surveillance camera and then calls Glen.

Red and Elizabeth go there and find blood in the office but no one on site. Red says that someone is trying to obstruct his path.

Red and Elizabeth show up at Glen’s office and ask if he accessed the footage. Glen, in his usual fashion, gives Red info on the only vehicle that showed up before they arrived registered to Chuck Shaw. Glen gives Red the info on Shaw.

Red shows up at Shaw’s and asks about where Richard Fickman is. Shaw says he’s dead. Red questions him as to who hired him. Shaw motions to a folder that has all his whereabouts and movements, Red asks who hired him and he says he made a deal with Sofia Gallup. Shaw says that he was locked up and Sofia gave him parole on the condition he kills Fickman. Baz knocks Shaw out. Elizabeth calls the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia to come arrest Shaw.

Red and Elizabeth are back in his car and she gets off the phone and says the Bureau of Prisons confirms Doctor Gallup consults for them. Elizabeth says that she covers the whole northeast and license address is a P.O Box. Red wants to know who the last parolee the doctor testified for was. Elizabeth says it was Dennis Cauley who was released to an address in Richmond, Virginia.

They search Cauley’s living area and find a dosier on Doctor Gallup’s next target. The folder identifies the next victim as Alex Sato. When Red looks at the folder he says it is Daniel Nakamoto and he is a master forger. Red said that 13 years ago he was paid a pile of money for a cuneiform tablet by the Sacriponti crime family. Daniel did not know that the real one had been destroyed by looters 2 weeks earlier in an Iraqi museum. Daniel disappeared with the help of Sanctum shortly after that.

Red finds Daniel who is at a museum sketching. Red tells Daniel that his cover is blown. Liz notices Cauley moving through the crowd. Daniel begins to walk away. As Cauley makes a move, Baz subdues him. Red takes Daniel to his vehicle and asks him about what he knows about Sanctum. Daniel says that it is run by Tony and Maria Lopez and they own a honey company in Ohio. The used bee colonies all around the world as safe houses. Daniel said he was not kidding when he said it was impossible for the Sanctum Corp to give them up because Tony and Marie died months ago. Red calls Glen for info on them.

Glen shows up with a student driver and Red and Liz get in. Red says they need privacy and Glen tells them that the driver does not know English. Glen tells her directions in Spanish. Glen then says that Tony and Marie ran Sanctum for decades, 9 months ago they got burnt to a crisp in the middle of the night. The police report says it was arson, but they have no suspects. Glen says that they had a daughter named Vanessa, but she took a different path and she is a therapist. Glen said that she was there for the fire and was burned badly but survived.

Red arrives at a bee farm and finds a woman covered in bees.

When it cuts back to the farm the woman, Vanessa, says that this place was the backbone of their honey business. She said that her father began helping people that needed help hiding out. She said that eventually they were making more from hiding criminals over the bee farm. Vanessa said that they entire fortune was in a Vulcan safe in the basement and the only people who know that were the criminals. Someone came back and used an acetylene to try and get into the safe. The torch started a fire and she was the only one who survived. Elizabeth deduces that she does not know which client did this so she is killing them all. Vanessa says that if they are in the ledger they deserve it. Red says he wants to see the ledger. Red looks through the book and tears a page out.

Liz tells Red that Aram is back, and he says that Dembe is innocent. Red says he needs to be the judge of that himself. They arrive at Dembe’s daughters place who welcomes them inside. Red tells Isabella that he needs to speak to her father. Isabella reluctantly hands over a prepaid phone that she said Dembe sends her with one number in it. Red calls the number and Dembe answers. Red says that everything he is doing makes him look guilty. Dembe says she came her to see for herself and she’s not here, Dembe is hit by an arrow and doesn’t respond. The phone goes dead.

Red calls Aram and asks what they found. Red says that Dembe said it was a woman, Aram tells Red that they found the name Kathryn Nemec. Red’s face goes white and he hangs the phone up.

Red is then in a car with Liz and tells her about how he trusted someone with all the worst offences and the person who cleaned up after him will now condemn him. Red says that Kathryn Nemec was a name that came to represent his darkest hours, his friend, Mr. Kaplan. Red says that when he pulled the trigger her never checked. Red said that he immediately regretted pulling the trigger. Liz asks if it can just be even now and Red says that he needs to find Dembe.

Red, Liz, and Baz arrive at the spot that Red shot Mr. Kaplan. Dembe comes stumbling out of the woods after being hunted by the guy that nursed Kathryn back to health Dembe says that Kate is alive. Red tells Liz to get Dembe to a hospital and he is going after the guy in the woods. Red gets the drop on the guy and shoots him in the leg.

Red and Baz have the hunter tied up in his cabin. Red tells the man to call Kate. The man refuses and puts a gun to his head. The man dials a number that creates a vibrating noise in the cabin. Red looks over and sees a bomb. He and Baz get out of the cabin and then it blows up.

Red takes Liz to the bunker acting as the center of his operations in Latvia. There, in a series of flashbacks, Liz learns the truth surrounding the death of the real Raymond Reddington, the creation of the imposter and the fate of Katarina Rostova. It is revealed that Katarina was spying on the real Reddington for both the KGB and the Cabal which he eventually deduced and continued their relationship for years in order to gather evidence to bring to his superiors. In the process, Reddington created the Fulcrum and eventually fled to America with the young Liz and the documents. Katarina followed him with a team that included Ilya Koslov to retrieve both her daughter and the Fulcrum, leading to a struggle in which a candle was knocked over, starting the fire. Reddington was armed with a gun that he dropped in the struggle and the young Liz shot her father in order to save her mother. As the fire consumed the house, Katarina brought Reddington into the car in an attempt to save his life, but Liz ran back into the burning house to retrieve her bunny, leading to them both getting burned in the process. The real Reddington ultimately died of his wounds in Katarina's arms, but the world remained unaware of his death. Due to the evidence planted against him by Katarina as a contingency plan, Reddington was believed to be a traitor by his own nation and legends were created around him as a result. Katarina subsequently gave her daughter up to Sam Scott for her own safety and had Liz's memory of the night of the fire erased in order to protect her.

Liz learns that Dom had told her most of the truth about what had happened next with Ilya posing as Reddington to get the 40,000,000 dollars that Katarina had planted, but that Dom had lied about who had become the imposter. Liz also learns that the woman she knew as her mother was in fact Tatiana Petrova, an asset set up by Dom and Ilya to fake Katarina's death. Tatiana's hunt for the real Katarina had forced Reddington, who had been helping her to hide, to kill Tatiana in order to protect Katarina who is still alive and in hiding. Katarina subsequently came up with the idea of constructing the fake Reddington as a way to protect her daughter from all of her enemies. Ivan Stepanov stole the Sikorsky Archive which became the central core of Reddington's criminal empire.

Having learned the why of the creation of the fake Reddington, Liz attempts to learn who he really is and where her real mother is located, but Neville Townsend attacks the bunker, killing Reddington's men and seriously wounding Liz. Retreating into a safe room, Reddington contacts Townsend over the public address system and admits that in his early days with the Archive, he had been somewhat carless with some of the documents, leading to the deaths of Townsend's family which he does regret. Reddington then explains the chemical self-destruct that the bunker has and begins activating it. Although Townsend believes that Reddington is bluffing as the bunker and the information in it is the source of his power, Reddington states that he has the source of his power, Liz, with him and activates the explosion.

Trivia[]

Unanswered Questions[]

  1. Why surrender to the FBI if he just could have sent them the Blacklist?
    1. A: The criminals on the Blacklist have escaped the FBI for years. Red does not trust the FBI to capture them without his help.
    2. A: To get closer to Elizabeth while still accomplishing his presently undisclosed purposes. He knew his information was worth the price of temporary capture. The Justice Department would accept his immunity deal. He can always escape if the situation required it. He will remain in constant contact with Elizabeth Keen and she will be forced to work with him. Keen has been committing more non-regulation actions and Red has been training her to adopt a criminal viewpoint.
    3. A: Red needs the FBI to protect him until he has enough leverage to confront the adversary mentioned in “The Courier”. The FBI provides protection and gives him strategic depth to maneuver.
    4. A: The FBI will weaken his adversary, by having his/her allies arrested. The arrests will weaken Milos Kirchoff and the Cabal.
    5. A: In “Berlin” and “Berlin: Conclusion” we meet Milos Kirchoff, the adversary who has been attacking Red.
    6. A: In “The Kingmaker”, Red reveals that his syndicate is under attack and many of his contacts are wavering in their support. Unlike the black market, the FBI can call upon the United States government for more support. Using the FBI sends the message that Red can manipulate an entire federal agency. If Milos Kirchoff goes too far then the United States Department of Justice will declare war on him. Alan Fitch will have to retreat rather than risk public exposure.
    7. A: Using the FBI, as he stated in “The Freelancer”, means Reddington can destroy his enemies without risking his life and the FBI will protect him. He is using Troy's strategy in “Face/Off” where Troy continues to impersonate Archer so the FBI will be credited/blamed for the wave of arrests that target Troy's enemies. This is a lesson in the “Thirty-Six Stratagems”, Chapter 1: Winning Stratagems: Kill with a borrowed sword.
    8. A: He gains resources from the FBI which helps him to protect and increase the size of his criminal syndicate. As The Blacklist criminals are removed from the black market, Red will be able to win new clients to his syndicate. Red stated that Eric Trettel was superior to him for supplying faked deaths, therefore by removing Trettel Red becomes the leading supplier of escape routes.
    9. A: In addition to being able to read the FBI's files, he can view law enforcement from the inside and learn how they operate. By working with the FBI, he learns how to exploit their areas of political weakness.
    10. A: In a flashback in “Requiem” Red tells Nemec that his enemies are getting too close to Elizabeth so he's going to turn himself in to protect her directly.
  2. What is his interest in Elizabeth?
    1. A: As Raymond states to Elizabeth when asked, “Because of your father”, though he doesn't elaborate on this. This could be simply due to his obvious friendship with Sam, her adopted father, or it has been left open for the possibility that Raymond actually is Elizabeth's father. At Raymond's house, he rips off a panel on the wall exposing what is obviously a parent's height chart for their child. The last mark on the wall is at age 3. Elizabeth was adopted by Sam when she was around 4 years old. Raymond also relives a memory while at his old house of a little dark haired girl playing in his front yard who is obviously his daughter given the height chart he had just revealed. Throughout many episodes, Raymond makes various remarks to people regarding Elizabeth or to Elizabeth that could allude to this fact. His conversation with Sam at the hospital is particularly telling in this regard.
      1. Raymond's degree of knowledge of Elizabeth and her life, and his obvious past relationship with her adopted father shows that he hasn't just learned all there is to know about her prior to coming to turn himself in to the FBI. Rather, he has been following her her entire life, and undoubtably knows even more about her life than she does in some extents.
    2. A: Raymond Reddington is Elizabeth's father (see below).
  3. What is his interest in Tom Keen?
    1. A: Red knows that Tom is living a double life. He needs to force Liz to confront that reality that Tom is an assassin/spy.
    2. A: Red had hired Tom to get close to Liz as a friend so that he could keep an eye on her. When their relationship turned romantic, he fired Tom, only for him to be hired by Milos Kirchoff.
  4. Why did he leave his family?
    1. A: In “Madeline Pratt”, he mentions that he left his family in order to protect them.
    2. A: In “Nicholas T. Moore”, Red explains to Jennifer that he had to abandon Naomi and Jennifer in order to protect them from the Cabal.
    3. A: The real Raymond was murdered by Elizabeth Keen (Character).
  5. What happened to his family?
    1. A: His decision to destroy his old house and the death of Stanley R. Kornish suggest that Red's family was killed in a vendetta. The fact that Diane Fowler knew what happened implicates Alan Fitch.
  6. Why did he become a criminal? He was being trained for the rank of admiral.
    1. A: The real Raymond Reddington was framed for treason (giving away coordinates to the KGB) by Katarina Rostova and Alan Fitch so no one would believe him when he tried to expose the Cabal. He had to enter the black market to survive. We don't know the background of Ilya Koslov.
    2. A: To protect Keen. The imposter was not a naval officer.
  7. What is the significance of the numbers, 042983 (Megan Boone's DOB), received in “Wujing”?
    1. A: They refer to a woman named Lucy Brooks on the FBI's ViCAP (Violent Criminal Apprehension Program) system. (“General Ludd”)
  8. Who was the woman whose picture Red removed from Stanley R. Kornish's album?
    1. A: It's possible the woman in the Stewmaker's album is Lucy's mother. His search for the information in ViCAP in both “Wujing” and “General Ludd”, suggests that Lucy could be possibly Red's daughter.
    2. A. The woman in the photo is the daughter of Berlin. The Stewmaker was contracted to help fake her death in order to hide from her father and frame Raymond Reddington, thereby attracting Berlin's wrath.
    3. A: The woman is Zoe D'Antonio, Berlin's daughter. Red had been framed by Alan Fitch for her death.
  9. Is he Elizabeth's father?
    1. A: He denies this when asked by her in “Anslo Garrick: Conclusion”, but the fact he pauses before doing so means he could be lying or isn't certain. Red reiterates several times through the series that he has never lied to Elizabeth.
    2. A: In “Dr. Adrian Shaw: Conclusion”, Red tells Constantin Rostov that he is Elizabeth's father, although there is doubt as to whether he is telling the truth.
    3. A: In “Mr. Kaplan: Conclusion”, the real Raymond Reddington is confirmed to be Keen's father, Cooper retrieves a blood sample from evidence from one of Reddington's naval missions prior to his disappearance and has the DNA compared against Elizabeth's. Red neither confirms nor denies this.
    4. A: In “Sutton Ross”, the bones in the duffle bag are revealed to be Raymond Reddington's, suggesting that the seen “Red” is not Elizabeth's father.
  10. Why did Ranko Zamani and the Freelancer work with him?
    1. A: Zamani acted as a decoy in exchange for his chance to detonate the chemical weapon. The Freelancer did not suspect Red was using him to expose Floriana Campo.
  11. Did Gina Zanetakos really work for Red?
    1. A: Unlikely, Gina's confession and Tom's identification of Newton Phillips resulted in Liz showing rage. Gina was either telling the truth to ensure her deal or Red's adversary ordered her to falsely confess.
    2. A: With Newton Phillips being revealed as the mole in “The Good Samaritan”, it is possible that he or another member of Red's staff hired her.
  12. Is he looking for redemption? In “The Stewmaker” he tells a story that applies to Milos Kirchoff.
  13. Who is Raymond Reddington?
